The Shining: Responsive Questions

The Shining by Stephen King starts off with Jack Torrance and about a man named Ullman who is interviewing him for a job as a caretaker for the Overlook Hotel. Ullman is telling him everything that he needs to know because he wants Jack’s wife, Wendy, knows what she is gettingThe Shining by Stephen King starts off into and also their son Danny by staying the hotel all winter. Jack tells Ullman that Wendy and his son are very special people. Their son has psychic abilities to see things in the future or in the past.
Stephen King did a very good job when he mentioned how Ullman started showing Jack the floor plans of the hotel. He said how the top floor has been changed several times since World War 2. He also mentions how he wants Jack to put some rat poison because they have heard “rustling noises.” The hotel has 110 rooms, a Presidential Suite, front desk, dining room, Colorado Lounge, and a banquet area. This just starts the book of great because you get a perfect imagination of this creepy scary hotel. The main characters so far are Ullman, Jack, Danny, and Wendy. In chapter 1 we get a little clear idea of each character. We learn that Grady also had a job as the winter caretaker and he ended up loosing his temper. He brought in his wife and his two daughters, and had “cabin fever” which led him to kill himself and his family. One of the most important character in my eyes is Danny. Danny is intelligent, patient, loving, adventuresome, forgiving, and kind. Danny is very special in almost everyone eyes , even Overlook. Stephen King had him like this for a reason to show us the child’s perspective in a deep dark matter. Children usually observe more than adults than adults even suspect. By making Danny "special" he has the mind of the unusual five year old which is very scary. Every time I read I can visualize the pictures most of the time, which is amazing. In The Shining, when Danny is having a flashback with Tony and he takes him into the darkness and deep snow, and Danny starts seeing buildings, and warning signs like " NO SWIMMING. DANGER!" Since Danny can't read, but he is kinda getting the feeling. Then when he gets in a room with mirrors and all he sees is the word "REDRUM" This part was very illustrative, while I was reading it I had a picture in my head imagining how Danny is running from room to room and seeing how everything is either smashed or getting smashed including his mother's record player. The word REDRUM was flashing in the mirrors, and this got my mood changing into feeling terrified. I just wanted to keep reading even if I knew sort of what was going to happen and everything, but I wanted ALL the clear details! And maybe some of my imaginations would change, and things wouldn't go as I imagined, that's why King wrote it like this to keep you reading and going. What I like about the author's style is that he uses descriptive words such as" The hand is dripping blood" or when Tony took Danny to the "hallway with blue carpet"

The Exorcist

Overall I would say the exorcist is not scary, just disgusting. I think at that time when the exorcist came out in 1973 it did scare people. I believe if I watched it back then I would think it would be very scary because the technology and film shots used in that movie is excellent for a film produced back then. The reason why it was scary back then is because there wasn’t really any film that entertained the audience by vomiting and the existence of spiritual demon possession. We live in a society where generation and generation we get more technology out and our animations for film get better!
The scariest scene in the exorcist would have to be the whole time she’s in bed and the devil has gotten into her. If you look at the picture, it’s disgusting because you first got to see this little innocent girl and right away she’s turning into a devil. Her face has all scars on it and just by looking at her eyes you’ll be scared; they’re all widened up and her eyebrows are up and crunched together like she’s up for no good. The throw up all over her bed and on her chest is just disgusting and disturbing, which gets the audience grossed out. Some of the visuals are also scary in the film because they were created by special effects that caused it to be different and scary. Regan’s exorcist face is the scariest faces ever seen in a movie. Secondly, the exorcist’s voice is very creepy and disturbing and the director makes sure you don’t forget her scary voice. Thirdly, a lot of people find the idea of being haunted by a demon or anything is very terrifying.
The parts in the exorcist that are no longer scary are all the scenes she turns her head around in a 360 degrees. I find this film more funny than scary just because I have seen worse scarier movies with better effects that pass the exorcist. Another thing about the exorcist is when she’s in bed and she’s rising above the bed and the priest is praying on her to release the devil that is inside her body. This part was not scary; because there’s nothing scary about her, its funny how you see her get up little by little she goes higher like she’s floating in the air. The foul language that was used by the exorcist was not at all scary, it was just funny. Some people might think that’s scary because they find it awkward to hear a language like talked by someone little like her. But it really wasn’t, it caused a little humor to the entire student in class.

Blog 2: Supernatural

Supernatural usually means above and beyond abnormal. Supernatural can sometimes can come from ghostly characteristics. Yes there is supernatural in existing life today. I do believe there are angles; there is a heaven, and hell. Unusually things usually happen from time to time and you would only see it a big deal if you believed in supernatural. Now on the other hand the psychic powers, ghosts, goblins of “supernatural” do not exist because they are beyond nature. If people are cured by God, then there sure is supernatural. I can relate to this because a family friend we knew for a very long period of time had late stage cancer. Doctors could not do anything about it, nobody really could. But everyone that loved him and believed in him prayed for him over and over, and he recovers and his cancer cuts back. But overall the souls, religion in supernatural do exist. But the exorcist, ghosts, devils, in supernatural I believe do not exist. Something like the exorcist is just not possible, especially if you’re Christian because that’s just not in our beliefs and is over the top.
The way I think supernatural exists is just everything around us, such as having the Earth as the center of the universe, and one god above us. But the ghosts, vampires, and witches are a different story that I will just not believe because they are not realistic, but I had a friend who said she saw an old creepy man standing in her dining room and the next second she looked back he was gone. I find that really creepy , and unusual I think that is just all imagination or just spirits. Something like the exorcist is not possible, you cannot be possessed by the demon and have them control your entire soul and body. On the other hand, I do think spirits exist but in a good way, they're just a reminder that your loved ones are still there.

First Horror Film

Me being me was always a fan of the scary movies, but then I start to chicken out half way through the movie. But growing up I've always had to watch scary films with my two brothers, and I didn't want to deny to them that I wasn't interested or anything so I would just go along. My favorite horror film growing up would have to be Scream. I first watched this movie when I was four years old. Scream is about a young girl Sidney Prescott's mother was killed and after a year of her death, two students were also found missing. When the whole town realizes a serial killer is going around and killing victims, Sidney beings to get a feeling that her mother's death and the two students are related. The killer begins to pick up everyone one by one, which makes no one safe. The psychopath begins to stalk victims, teases them with trivia questions, and then rips them to blood. Everyone at Woodsboro High School is terrified, because it can be anyone. This horror film is very bloody and gory, but what held my interest is trying to find the actual serial killer. Since all it takes is someone to wear the gown and the mask. I've watched a lot of scary movies that include a killer, and usually it's very noticeable who the killer is, but not so in Scream. I remember while I would watch the movie, everyone at one point felt like he/she was the serial killer. You couldn't clearly know who the killer was, it would be someone who you identified but then you would be tricked into another suspicious character. Scream didn't just freeze me up in a bundle, but you start freaking out from every sound you hear in your house, whether the lights are on, or even if you’re safe outside in the day or light. Why I enjoyed this movie is because there is no escape from the movie until you get really scared and you find out who the real killer is. Scream was the first movie very scary movie that I watched, and it was very popular at that time, which made me want to watch it even more! After Scream came out, a couple more series also came out: Scream 2 and Scream 3. They even began making Halloween costumes from Scream’s mask and costume.
This movie was one of my favorites because the liveliness of the film makes it a good selection for anyone that is interested in watching a movie. It grabs your attention at the random moments and didn’t keep me sleepy or bored throughout the entire movie! I wouldn’t say I’m a HUGE fan of scary movies, but I do like to watch the latest scary movies. I personally hate watching “fake” scary movies with unrealistic characters, because I know that those wouldn’t happen in my life. When I do watch scary movies, I like to watch ones that you know can actually happen. For example Scream anyone now a day can dress in that familiar costume and be a serial killer, and kill innocents. But overall, I do enjoy watching scary movies especially with a group of friends!
